What it's made of

Melamine-faced chipboard throughout, with the anthracite and pine décors applied to different sections of the unit. Both finishes are sealed, so neither is bothered by the condensation ring a water glass leaves overnight. Inside the cupboard, the shelf is fixed rather than repositionable — less flexible, but structurally stronger.

Fitting it into the room

The unit measures 57cm high, 51cm wide and 32cm deep. That 32cm depth is what makes it viable in the smaller bedrooms most UK houses actually have — it stays close to the wall instead of jutting into the walking space. The 57cm height brings the top to roughly mattress level, and the 51cm width takes a lamp plus books without crowding. Leave about 60cm in front so the doors swing clear.
