Changing a shade is the cheapest way to update a lamp you already own. The base can stay exactly where it is while the character of the whole room shifts.

Choosing the right size

As a general rule, the shade should be roughly twice the width of the lamp base, and about a third of the total lamp height. A shade that is too small makes a base look top-heavy; too large and it dominates. Check whether your lamp takes a ring fitting or a spider fitting before ordering, as the two are not interchangeable.
