About the velvet

Charcoal is where velvet's pile does its most obvious work. A flat charcoal fabric is simply grey; a charcoal velvet moves between near-black and soft dove depending on the angle and the light, so the chair has depth from every side. It is the reason a dark velvet chair never reads as a heavy block in the way a dark flat-weave can.

The pile is dense and short, which wears better than long-pile velvet and resists crushing. Directional shading will appear where people sit — inherent to the fabric, not a fault, and brushing the pile restores it. Dark velvets do show lint and pet hair more readily than pale ones, so keep a lint brush nearby if you have animals.

How to style it

This is the one to choose if you want the chair to fit rather than announce itself. Charcoal works against almost every wall colour, pairs with warm and cool palettes equally, and lets a patterned rug or bold artwork take the lead. It is also the most forgiving in a room you are still working out.

For contrast, put it against pale plaster, warm white or a soft green. For drama, go tonal — charcoal chair, darker walls, brass lighting. At 65cm across it suits a study, a home office, a bedroom corner, or a hallway.

Delivery and care

Vacuum regularly on a low setting with a brush attachment, working with the pile rather than against it. Blot spills immediately rather than rubbing. Keep out of prolonged direct sunlight — velvet fades faster than most upholstery. Brush the pile back into alignment after heavy use.
