About the velvet

Gold is the colourway where velvet's shifting pile matters most. Depending on the angle and the light, the same chair reads as ochre, mustard, honey or pale bronze — a flat fabric in this shade would look brash, but the pile keeps it moving and stops it going flat or brassy.

The pile is dense and short, which wears better than long-pile velvet and resists crushing under regular use. Some directional shading will appear where people sit; that is inherent to velvet rather than a fault, and brushing the pile restores it.

How to style it

This is the colourway for dark rooms. Against deep green, charcoal, navy or an inky wall it does the work a lamp does, and it is genuinely striking beside exposed brick or dark timber. In a pale room it goes softer and warmer rather than loud — think oatmeal, chalk white, natural linen.

Avoid pairing it with cool greys, which turn it slightly sour. Brass and walnut are its natural companions. At 65cm across it works in a bedroom, a dressing room, a snug, or a hallway that needs a spot of warmth.

Delivery and care

Vacuum regularly on a low setting with a brush attachment, working with the pile rather than against it. Blot spills immediately rather than rubbing. Keep out of prolonged direct sunlight — pale and warm-toned velvets show fading soonest. Brush the pile back into alignment after heavy use.
