Chenille's raised pile gives the surface depth and light-catch that a flat weave cannot match, and it is what stops a neutral colour looking flat or cheap. On taupe the effect is subtle but important: the pile shifts the tone between warmer and cooler as light moves across it, so the chair has more life than the colour name suggests.

It also wears well. Mid-tone textured fabric is the most forgiving combination for everyday use — better than ivory for marks, better than a dark colour for showing lint. Assembly is required.
